Emily’s First Tooth Gone

IMG_1567

Last week Emily finally lost her first baby tooth. She’s seven (going on eight in January) and we were wondering when it was going to happen. Abby had lost four or five at this point. She lost one of her lower front teeth and one on the top is already loose. So, maybe she’s just going to loose all her teeth at once. She was really excited since she had been watching Abby get money from the Tooth Fairy for years now. She put the tooth under her pillow and received $5 from the Tooth Fairy the next morning. She was so proud that she carried the money around the house all afternoon. Later, I found it discarded on the floor. I guess it had finally lost its “coolness”. (No, it didn’t go into my pocket. I put it in a safe place for her to spend later.)

The Constellation Daisy

abby_constalation This week’s Frenchville entry is brought to you by Abby. She had an assignment to create a constellation and come up with a story about the person who the constellation represented:

Long, long ago there was a beautiful girl named Daisy. She wore a ruby red dress. Pluto saw Daisy and fell in love with her. Pluto popped in front of Daisy and she jumped back.

“Do not be afraid,” said Pluto. “I want to take you to the Underworld.”

Daisy nodded a tiny bit.

Pluto walked by Daisy and said, “Okay, Let’s go!” And poof they were gone!

Meanwhile, Daisy’s mom was very mad that Pluto had taken Daisy to the Underworld, but she was the Goddess of Nature who made the Earth cold and the plants and trees die.

When Daisy saw the Underworld she was filled with awe.

Pluto said, “Yes. I know it is big.” Then a loud sound came on.

“What is that?” Daisy asked.

“That means something is going wrong on top of the Earth.” Daisy knew it was her mother. “We have to back up there.” And poof they were gone!

When they got up to the Earth, Daisy found her mother and she said, “STOP!!!” Then Earth was warm and the plants and the trees grew again.

Pluto asked, why she was doing this.

“She is my daughter!”

“Here she is. Now stop,” said Pluto, who left and said bye to Daisy. Then poof Pluto was gone.

Now Daisy is up in the night sky forever and ever.

Starting Up Soccer Again

After taking a year off, we’ve enrolled Emily back into soccer. She enjoyed it so much back when we were in Houston and she’s been asking for quite some time to get back into it. She just started three weeks ago and she’s already had three games. Although, they have a record of 0-2-1, they have potential and I think there has to be some weaker teams out there that they can take.

I can tell that Emily likes playing forward the best. As she says, she likes “kicking the ball”. I can also tell that she’s more aggressive than she was back in Kindergarten because she’s getting up where the ball is, where she used to hang back a little, shy to get into the mix or get hit by the ball.

This last game she was goalie for the first time and she did pretty well. I wasn’t so sure, but she tracked the ball well when they came near her. In total, she had 5 stops and threw the ball out better than any of the other girls. She said she enjoyed being the goalie, but I think in her heart she still enjoys playing forward.

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, Day 2

IMG_1487

The day started early with a trip over to the beach. The resort doesn’t border the beach, but they have what they call a Beach House. It’s a small property with a smaller pool and access to the beach. We went down early for a tour of the different creatures that inhabit the beach. The girls quickly lost interest and headed down to play in the waves.

After lunch, we headed over the pool area’s community room in order to make “vacation pillows”. The girls picked out two pieces of fabric and then cut some fringe along the sides and tied to together. They stuffed the pillow and closed up the forth side.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the pool. Where Abby had the quote of the day. They were getting ready to start “Pool-Side Karaoke” and she said, “When are they going to start singing so that we can judge them.” I’m already judging them by electing to participate in pool-side karaoke.

The evening was “Kids Night Out”. We took the girls back up to the community room where they had some pizza and then went out to the movies to see Nanny McPhee Returns. While they were out, we went out to eat at a local restaurant, CQ’s. Afterwards, we walked around the harbor before heading back to the resort to pick up the girls.

Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, Day 1

At the beginning of the year we decided to buy into the Disney Vacation Club. We only bought 100 points, which will allow us a long weekend a year at one of Disney’s resorts. We wanted our first taste of the Vacation Club to be something away from Florida, but within driving distance. So, we decided to make our first destination Hilton Head, South Carolina.

We woke up early and boarded Austin at the local kennel, getting there right as they opened at 8:00 a.m. and then we the road. The route was pretty simple: I-4 to I-95 out the north end of Florida and down the east coast of Georgia. The whole trip took us 4 1/2 hours. Not too bad.

We arrived and went to check out our room. While the girls played around the outside of the condo, Jennifer and I planned out the next four days from all the pamphlets the person at the front desk gave us.

Next, we spent the whole afternoon at the pool. It was a good sized pool with a slide the girls loved sliding down. The girls swam around while Jennifer found the bar and ordered a couple of margaritas for us and we just hung out at the pool relaxing.

It’s traditional that we eat pizza on Friday night. Looking around on the Internet, we couldn’t find a local joint that had good reviews. So, we headed to the Mellow Mushroom, which is a great pizza joint we know from Winter Park.

We ended the day with a campfire sing-a-long and marshmallow roast. The two sing-a-long leaders were dressed in 70’s style clothing and led us in various camping songs, which Jennifer seemed to know well from Girl Scout camping.

Back To School

IMG_1386

It’s once again time to go back to school. We are now entering our third week of school and I can’t believe the summer went by so fast. Between working so much and Abby’s summer school, it felt like it just flew by. This year is quite a milestone: all the girls are finally in grade school together. Izzy entered Kindergarten this year and she’s so excited to be riding the bus with her sisters. Something she’s been talking about for a year.

Another going back to school event is that Jennifer is going back to get her Bachelors in Interior Design at Seminole State College. She received her Associates Degree back when we started dating over twelve years ago and now that the girls are out of the house, she’s taking the opportunity to take a few classes.

Gift of a New Home Office

Last week when Jennifer was asking me what I wanted for my birthday, I had no idea of what to tell her. I’ve been wanting my own home office for quite a while and it didn’t even dawn on me until I saw one of the Featured Workspace articles on Lifehacker. It was simple and nicely organized. When I saw the pictures, I knew this is what I wanted. Jennifer spent the past several months painting the interior of our house and I knew that I could probably convince her to paint one more room. She was just excited that I wanted to use my birthday money on the house.

We told everyone to send money and we did a quick tally before heading out to IKEA. I settled on the Galant desk system which allows you to put together several pieces into a very sturdy desk. We added a couple of bookcases and some red paint and started to work. I’ve received many questions on “why red and not burnt orange”. While burnt orange would have been a great color, I do have to work in the office and I’m not sure I could stand such a bold color for that long. I tell myself that it’s Houston Astros “brick red” and that’s enough for me.

Jennifer spent all day Friday and Saturday painting and did a great job. Late Saturday, I started putting the Ikea furniture together and quickly the rest of the room came together. I would like to thank Jennifer for all the hard work she did in painting and also that she gave up her share of the office so that I can have my own space. It’s a great birthday present. I love you, Dear. Thank you.

Swim Lessons and Summer School

Picture 139

At the suggestion of Abby’s counselors, we entered her into a county sponsored summer reading program. It was four weeks long and ran Monday through Thursday. Abby passed to the fourth grade by the skin of her teeth and it was our hope that this would help boost her reading skills. My only problem with the program was that I had to get her to a bus by 7:00 in the morning. It was a small price to pay, but this was supposed to be summer. I was wanting my extra 30 minutes of sleep in the morning before going to work. Anyway, it appears that it has helped. We’ve been reading the Magic Tree House series of books and tonight I could tell she was reading a lot better.

Meanwhile, Emily and Izzy have been attending swim lessons for the past three weeks. Izzy has already “graduated” up one class. Although that isn’t saying much, for her age group. I think the different is whether or not they get their head wet. I can tell Emily has gotten a renewed confidence in the water. She used to not go anywhere without hanging onto my back. Now she’ll jump in and swim back to the ledge no problem. She didn’t have near as much confidence at the beginning of the summer when we were hopping down to Disney to go swimming in their pools.

Izzy’s 5th Birthday Party

IMG_1355

It doesn’t happen that often that we can actually have one of the girls’ parties on their exact birthday, but that happened this year with Izzy. We figured since her birthday fell on this Sunday, we would have it on that day. It was a little tricky since her last day of pre-school was last week, so we needed to make sure and get all the invitations out to her class mates before the end of the year.

We decided to just have a part at the house and invite some of the neighbors and Izzy’s classmates from pre-school. We didn’t have much of a turn out, only about a quarter of the kids that were in her class were able to make it, but Izzy didn’t seem to care. They had fun playing various games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey. We ordered some pizza and then had some cake. Izzy was all smiles, which she usually is. She is very excited about turning five and going to her sisters’ school next year. She can hardly wait.

Turning a House into a Home

While I’ve been busy trying to finish out Madden NFL 11, Jennifer has been busy at painting the house. She has started with the entry room and is now moving on to the kitchen. We decided to move the dining room into the larger area closer to the patio. It gives us more room in the dining room, for when we use it. Eventually we will hire a electrician to put in a chandelier there and we need to now figure out what we are going to do with the space that was voided by the dining room furniture.

It’s amazing how much a little bit of paint will help a house feel more “homey”. The house we bought last year had just the basics when it came to paint and fixtures. We had to put in all new mini-blinds and ceiling fans when we moved in. All the walls were painting a plain old builder’s-grade white. Now the house looks like someone actually lives in it now. Slowly we are transforming the house into our home. We are really loving our new house here in Oviedo.
